Fujifilm feeds digital camera boom

Fuji Photo Film Co. has bought its distributor for Australia and New Zealand, Hanimex Australasia Pty Ltd, so that it can compete with the growing need for digital cameras in this area, having witnessed the demand grow massively over the last few years.

Hainmex has been the distributor of Fujifilm's products for the last 30 years and has established a strong position in Australia and New Zealand.

As well as experiencing a rise in the demand for digital cameras, Fujifilm has also seen a sharp increase in the need for "Frontier" digital minilabs and other digital printers.

Digital image diagnostic systems for medical use have also been recording high growth and Fujifilm expects this increases to continue for many years.

The IDC conducted a special study recently about the growth of digital services, which featured Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, Kodak, Olympus, Hewlett Packard, Ricoh, Minolta and BenQ.

The study revealed that Sony currently holds the strongest position in the digital market, but traditional camera vendors, such as Kodak, Fujifilm, Olympus and Canon are focusing their resources into offering more complementary products and services like photo printers and online photo services that allow photo printing and sharing at home. IDC says they are focusing on this to enhance the concept of the digital home.

IDC analyst, Su-Lin NG, who conducted the research expected the industry to get even more fierce for Fujifilm, despite this recent acquisition. "Fierce competition will continue among digital still camera vendors to offer the best range of products and services that facilitates ease of use and sharing. At the same time, vendors will also continue to be competitive in price and promotional activities that will increase buying interest. The vendor with the best package will increase their ability to lead in the digital home space."

IDM approached Fujifilm for a comment, but nobody from the organisation is allowed to talk about this acquisition at this time.
