RealNetworks beats Microsoft to Vodafone deal

By Stuart Finlayson

Digital media company RealNetworks has scored a major success in its battle with Microsoft in the market for multimedia software by securing a deal with Vodafone to supply the software to deliver video and audio clips to the telco's high-end handset users.

The deal, which will see RealNetworks provide mobile media delivery solutions technology to power audio and video services for Vodafone Live! is highly significant, given that Vodafone currently has the world's largest mobile community, a fact that is not lost on RealNetworks' chairman and CEO, Rob Glaser.

"The relationship between RealNetworks and Vodafone is a major step forward in making mobile media a mainstream reality. We are very excited about working with Vodafone to enable content providers to offer content to consumers, and for consumers to access the media they want, when and where they want it."

Meanwhile, Thomas Geitner, chief executive, global products and services, Vodafone, said the deal would help drive Vodafone Live! forward.

"This agreement with RealNetworks for global video streaming technology, through Siemens' global systems integrator, gives Vodafone yet another opportunity to enhance the mobile experience of our Vodafone live! customers by delivering video and audio content. We are optimistic about the quality of RealNetworks' services and will be deploying them in a number of markets."
