Leaping into backup

Joining the range of backup software systems that have been announced of late is the new DX30 from Quantum. DX30 will be available immediately and is compatible with most hardware and software options on the market.

Existing customers will receive the application at no extra cost as part of the Quantum program.

The latest DX30 has an improved graphical user interface (GUI) and now has full fabric support for most major manufacturers' switch technology. It is compatible with the major software management suites in use, such as Veritas' NetBackup and Backup Exec, Legato's NetWorker and BrightStor and ARCserve from Computer Associates (CA).

Quantum said they see end users setting the DX30 as the backup target and then scheduling archival operations between the DX30 and tape libraries when it is convenient to them, which should, they claim, reduce the chance of their being network traffic problems. DX30 appears to other backup software suites as a tape drive; it in fact captures the data so that it is available for restore purposes and is then backs up to a conventional technology.

The fabric compatibility allows the DX30 to be integrated into a host of network infrastructures and it can be used with systems from Brocade and McData.

Quantum claims that the software allows backups to take place rapidly and for functions and restorations to be quickly carried out. End users can monitor the performance of the system through the GUI on site or that can work remotely via a Web based interface with a secure connection.
