Analysts back EMC

Analysts back EMC

Two independent reports from analysts have depicted EMC as a leader in the network storage sector.

IDC's latest report puts EMC as leader in external RAID for the sixth year in a row and reported that the corporation gained market share in the networked storage market in the fourth quarter of 2002.

The IDC report puts EMC as the number one provider of network storage in both the network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) arenas. IDC's report claims that EMC's revenue from network storage was 30.1 per cent in 2002 and that the company gained market share in the fourth quarter. According to IDC, EMC's market share was 50 per cent higher than rivals Hewlett-Packard (HP).

The networked storage market was responsible for 54 per cent of all external RAID revenues in 2002 as customers deployed NAS and SAN solutions instead of direct attached storage (DAS) solutions.

As a result of these good performances, EMC led the external RAID market for the sixth year in a row with a revenue share of 20.1 per cent. EMC's RAID revenue is reported to have grown by 22 per cent from the third quarter to the fourth quarter, the report states.

"In a year when customers' experienced unprecedented pressure on information technology spending, organisations around the world accelerated their move to consolidated network storage," said David Goulden, the executive vice president of global marketing and new business at EMC of the market performance.

IDC's report also found that EMC led the external RAID controller based storage market for both the Unix and Windows NT and 2000 markets, with 23 per cent and 22 per cent revenue share in each respectively. IDC believes that external RAID controller based storage for these two environments accounted for 78 per cent of the total RAID storage market in 2002.

EMC also received good news from the Meta Group. In its Metaspectrum report on the SAN and NAS markets, Meta Group said that EMC is a leader in both markets. As reported last week (Click here to read story) Network Appliance (NetApp) was considered to be the market leader by Meta Group. EMC was the only company in the Meta Group report to be considered a leader in both markets, whilst NetApp was considered a leader in the NAS market.
