New disk and tape SME solutions from IBM

At its Partnerworld exhibition in New Orleans, IBM announced new versions of its disk and tape storage solutions. At the product announcement, IBM said these systems were being aimed at medium sized business and will include software support.

IBM said the new storage solutions were ideal for data intensive applications such as business intelligence, digital media and the growing life science industries.

The line up includes a new FAStT900 disk storage solution that provides end users with a claimed 120 per cent performance improvement over the previous model. A new TotalStorage linear tape solution using the Ultrium 2 drive was also announced. Using the new LTO tape standard IBM claims the new model has twice the capacity of the previous model.

As well as new hardware, IBM announced software support for the new announcements. Tivoli Storage Manager supports both the FAStT900 and Ultrium tape drives.

In announcing the new products, IBM said these would form the storage mainstay of their Small and Medium Business Advantage initiative. The initiative is a series of incentives to be offered to potential end users through the channel partners. As we went to press there was no news from the local branch office as to whether this will be introduced into the Australian market.
