Hitachi Data Systems has increased the capacity and abilities of the 9900 V Series, by increasing the capacity, connectivity and throughput.

Hitachi said the upgrades were part of the TrueNorth roadmap, announced earlier last year.

As a result the Lightning 9900 V Series now offers 146 GB drives, which doubles its raw total capacity to 148 TB and a total usable capacity of 128TB in a RAID-5 configuration.

The connectivity has been increased by offering 32FICON channels and 64 Fibre channel connections at 2GB per second. Virtual Storage Ports have also been added so that they Lightning 9900 V Series can be used in a storage area network (SAN) configuration. Hitachi claims this means that every server has its own "virtual private storage" network.
