Adaptec mops up bankrupt Tricord

The tricorder from Star Trek is a classic in future technology, so Adaptec's purchase of bankrupt NAS developer Tricord Systems has good omens in its push to develop hybrid NAS/SAN devices.

Adaptec said it would pay US$2 million in cash for the technology assets of Tricord Systems, with the transaction expected to be completed on November 15. Adaptec claimed it would not assume any liabilities or customer obligations as part of the acquisition.

Tricord's main asset is, according to Adaptec, "unique, patented technology for managing highly scalable, network attached storage systems". Adaptec said it would use the technology to "extend its external storage products to include file- and block-based storage systems" - meaning that it would join such rivals as Network Appliance and EMC in building hybrid devices capable of operating in both network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) environments.

Adaptec's flagship external storage product line is DuraStor, based on RAID disk arrays and currently suitable only for use in SANs.
