Technology heavyweight Hewlett-Packard has chosen Australia as the location for a new storage facility which it claims is one of the largest in the world.

The multimillion dollar enterprise storage centre (ESC), located in the Sydney suburb of Rhodes, is the third such HP storage facility in the world with two other sites located in Colorado, United States and Nijmegan, Holland. HP officials said that, by working with HP's two other sites, the Rhodes facility completes HP's worldwide network of storage experts to provide 'follow the sun' support for customers anywhere.

Manned by eight local staff since inception, the ESC is the first in the Asia Pacific area and HP expects 100 customers from India to China and around the Asia Pacific area to pass through its doors each month.

The facility houses HP's storage technology alongside a broad range of hardware and software products from HP partners including Brocade, McData, Quantum, Veritas and Legato. The centre displays HP's network attached storage (NAS) devices and storage area network (SAN) components. There are three Enterprise Virtual Array systems at the centre, each capable of storing 17 terabytes of data.

HP claims that customers can test HP storage equipment in any configuration that suits their needs without putting their own systems at risk. Customers can also get a first hand look at HP's disaster recover and backup facilities, with a system that simulates a power outage to show how data can be transferred and backed up.

Paul Brandling, managing director of HP south Pacific said the centre will enable regional and domestic customers to have a first hand look at what storage networking can do for them.

"The valuable export potential of the Enterprise Storage Centre – both revenue and skill-based - cannot be underestimate and demonstrate HP's growing contribution to the Australian economy," Mr Brandling said.
