Exabyte's VXA-2 tape drives will be offered as a bundle with the pSeries class of eServer Unix-based servers and workstations from IBM.

The VXA-2 drives incorporate tape capacities of 80GB uncompressed and 160GB compressed, with a throughput of up to 12MBps, according to the company.

The drive can be installed internally to the pSeries servers, or connected to them as standalone 7206 enclosures.

Exabyte executives characterised the deal as being a replacement for the DDS storage technology.

"We believe we are providing IBM and others a superior product, a powerful next-generation solution that helps dispel any industry uncertainty about what's next in the DDS replacement arena," said Tom Ward, president and CEO of Exabyte.
