KnowledgeTree Launches On-demand Document Management Service

By Greg McNevin

October 12, 2007: Open source document management provider KnowledgeTree has announced the launch of a new software-as-a-service (SaaS) document management application

Built using the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and the rPath virtual appliance platform, the company claims the on-demand service enables SMBs an easy to use subscription-based document management service that is both cost-effective and secure.

The company says the service includes document management and collaboration features such as document versioning and auditing, metadata and content searching, workflow, tagging and tag clouds, RSS feeds and email triggers.

KnowwledgeTree says that by using Amazon Web Services and rPath it was able to roll out a scalable SaaS document management solution without significantly changing its on-premise application or investing in data centre infrastructure.

“The unique combination of rBuilder plus Amazon EC2 provides an alternative approach to Software as a Service for application providers,” stated Billy Marshall, rPath CEO and co-founder. “This solution means KnowledgeTree can spend less time supporting their product and more time enhancing it.”

KnowledgeTree says its open source document management application is downloaded over 14,000 times per month, and as it is aimed at SMBs the company believes that a significant number of its users would prefer a hosted, SaaS document management solution. As it is open source, KnowledgeTree COO Daniel Chalef says that customers also do not have to fear being locked into a proprietary service.
