Symantec Updates Altiris to Support Vista

June 12, 2007: In a bid to bolster software management, Symantec has announced a sizable update to its Altiris Software Virtualisation Solution (SVS), with support for Windows Vista and the addition of integrated application streaming being the most notable additions.

By signing a new partnership with the aptly named application streaming specialist AppStream, Symantec has been able to add on-demand delivery of virtualised applications to Altiris, garnering positive commentary from industry analysts at Gartner.

“Application virtualisation combines well with streaming technology,” said a spokesman for Gartner. “Because of the obvious benefits of combining these two technologies, application virtualisation is regarded by some users as synonymous with application streaming. The two technologies will eventually become inseparable.”

Symantec claims that SVS solves software ownership problems and simplifies application compatibility and on-demand computing. It also claims the roll out of Windows Vista creates an excellent opportunity for businesses to “take control of their computing environment” by picking more suitable applications for their needs. Although considering Vista’s temperamental attitude to application compatibility so far this remains to be seen

Altiris Version 2.1 will be available this week directly from Symantec and its resellers for US$29 (AU$34.50) per node.
