Storm of Data Vulnerabilities

June 20, 2007: Off the back of the recent NSW storms, the United States is gearing up for their own influx of unpredictable weather through the National Data Awareness Project, an education campaign addressing common data vulnerabilities.

Especially targeting states affected by the oncoming Hurricane season like Florida, the programme is designed to address the very real gap between data vulnerabilities and the actual data protection practices most business have in place.

The Project is boasting a member increase of 50 percent since its initial launch, with a number of archiving, backup, offsite storage and data recovery vendors lining up to participate. From Australia, data protection provider Moonwalk Inc has joined the initiate working to improve the ways business protect their operations from catastrophic data loss.

The NDAP says it works with business of all sizes to develop systematic approaches for evaluated their data protection and disaster recovery capabilities. The project urges organisations to identify their disaster plans, analyse their weak spots and choose optimal protection technologies from vendors to maximise their arsenal against disaster.

The Data Management Institute founder Jon William Toigo heads up the consortium of NDAP members. Toigo warns that with June 1 marking what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates as the worst hurricane season on record, up to 71 percent of business are still not prepared for disaster.
