Getting More out of RFID

March 29, 2007: RFID is starting move into everyday use, however, while the technology offers unprecedented levels of control and feedback the sheer volume of information generated during the tracking process can present new challenges.

To this end, IBM has unveiled new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software that it claims brings the explosion of supply chain information generated by RFID tags under control.

Called WebSphere RFID Premises Server 6.0, IBM says the software aggregates and analyses raw RFID and other sensor information from every corner of an enterprise, integrating it with enterprise applications such as ERP and billing systems.

"The advantage of using IBM's open architecture is that the information is stored in a manner that is useful for a number of different applications," said Shay Reid, AmerisourceBergen Vice President for Integrated Solutions. "IBM WebSphere products will enable [the supply of] near real time receiving and shipping information to manufacturers, as well as more closely track inventory and product demand."

IBM claims that the new software enables companies to take greater advantage of RFID technology in remote locations, such as distribution centres or stores, as well as to create and manage RFID solutions based on real-world situations.
