Perpendicular Recording Bumps up Capacity
Perpendicular Recording Bumps up Capacity
January 29th, 2007: Samsung has just introduced a new, beefed up 1.8 inch hard disc with up to 60GB of storage space.
Up until now, in order to hit that magic 60GB mark, two discs had to be used, essentially doubling the thickness of the drive. Using perpendicular recording technology, Samsung has crammed enough capacity into a single disc to keep depth at five millimetres and claim the prize for the largest single-disc capacity on the market.
Aside from 60GB, the 1.8-inch N-series comes in 20GB, 30GB, 40GB flavours, enough portable storage to snatch more critical company data in one foul swoop than ever before.
While the drive is currently being pitched at portable media centres and entertainment devices, increases in the capacity of portable storage devices serve as a good reminder on the importance of internal security.
With increasingly vast amounts of data fitting onto rapidly shrinking devices it has never been more important to have an effective internal data protection solution in place.
