Western Digital Ships SATA

January 27, 2006: Hot on Seagate’s heels, Western Digital today announced that it is shipping 500Gb Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives.

The half-terabyte drives feature 7,200 RPM performance with 300 MB/s transfer rate, 16 MB cache and Native Command Queuing (NCQ).

The company says that the new drive, called the WD Caviar SE16, has the lowest power consumption of any high-capacity desktop drive. Adding that this leads to lower heat levels, less wear on components and quiet operation.

WD Caviar drives are available now through the company’s online store for US$349.99. IDM is awaiting details of the local release.
