Gateway Turns Mountain Into Molehill

December 15, 2005: Storage solution provider Data Domain has released its new gateway server, the DD460g Enterprise Restorer. Aimed at turning fibre channel-attached external disk arrays into cost-effective storage environments, the DD460g uses software to compress data and store it on customers' disk arrays for long term archiving and retrieval.

Data Domain claims that DD460g achieves 20 to 50x compression while backing up data to SAN disk arrays.

With up to 200TB capacity, and what Data Domain claim is “several hundred GB/Hour” throughput, several months of backup data can be stored onsite, reducing reliance on tape.

“The value of Data Domain is its intelligent capacity optimisation software,” says Tony Asaro, senior analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group. “It makes total sense to use the storage you’ve already paid for... The economics are a no-brainer.”

With compliance and data retention regulations driving a rapid increase in storage requirements, companies need to not only think about increasing capacity, but also how to use it efficiently. Particularly if Australia follows the European Union’s lead.

Data Domain say that the DD460g is certified for use with VERITAS NetBackup and Backup Exec and EMC Legato Networker, as well as products from IBM, Oracle, HP, Commvault and BakBone.

When used with Data Domain’s Replicator software, the DD460g can also be used for remote office disaster recovery replication.
