Dell Unveils Huge Virtualisation Push

By Greg McNevin

May 9, 2008: Dell has given its virtualisation capabilities an enormous shot in the arm, announcing a broad swathe of new offerings, from servers and storage to software and services.

The company has come out with a dozen new dedicated virtualisation solutions including servers, tools and services, all aimed at simplifying the deployment and management of the increasingly popular technology in enterprises of any size.

“Virtualisation is quickly moving beyond hypervisors and hardware consolidation,” said Rick Becker, vice president of software and solutions, Dell Product Group. “Enterprises are looking for a broad array of servers, storage and services designed specifically for virtualised environments.

“Having been a leader in the first wave of virtualisation, today we are signaling our intent to lead the second,” he added.

The new lineup includes online advisory tools and ecommerce capabilities, new PowerEdge R805 and R905 servers optimised for virtualisation, integration between EqualLogic storage arrays and VMware Site Recovery Manager, automated virtual data centre management solutions from it and Egenera, and new and enhanced virtualisation services.

Dell claims this new push into deep virtualisation territory will yield faster and easier provisioning of virtual environments, rapid deployment and re-deployment, greater savings through energy efficiency and much more.

The new offerings are available now via Dell’s Global Infrastructure Consulting Services.
