Seagate eyes up monster external hard drive market

Apr 05, 2005: Seagate has released its external DVR hard drives, with 400GB of capacity, to provide plug-in storage for digital video recorders, and it claims that it is the only hard drive maker that offers this service.

In addition, it has unveiled a new application of its DriveTrust technology that allows cable services operators and DVR makers to lock external storage devices to a specific DVR or other device.

Seagate claims that this will help to implement more robust digital rights management solutions for set-top boxes and enables a variety of hard drive-based protection and privacy solutions.

It also says that subscribers can expand the storage capacity of their compatible DVRs, enabling them to keep the same DVR longer as they upgrade capacity.

Seagate claims that the external DVR storage hard drives are easy to set up and use; can be customised to match the service operator's requirements; and Seagate can assist with the development of features such as content protection and enhanced video streaming.
