NetApp broadens its virtualisation horizons

Mar 31, 2005: Network Appliance has updated its virtualisation software so that it will work with storage products from other vendors so that it can pool content together from DAS, NAS and San systems.

The V-Series, formerly known as gFiler, is capable of providing virtualisation across storage products from HDS, HP, IBM and Sun.

NetApp claims that this new product, which is a mixture of software and hardware, is useful to businesses that need to accommodate rapidly changing business needs, which include improved adherence to corporate governance requirements, virus protection and near-instantaneous data recovery.

Patrick Rogers, the vice president of products and partners at Network Appliance, said: "Combined with the advanced virtualisation capabilities of Data ONTAP 7g, the NetApp V-Series family offers customers the most comprehensive and sophisticated virtualisation engine available.

"The V-Series represents a true break from the past of 'NAS gateways' or 'storage routers', and offers customers new levels of protection. The V-Series represents the benchmark against which other vendors' solutions should be measured, and I challenge all our competitors to meet the broad array of customer pain points addressed by this solution."

Rogers believes that this system is extremely valuable to customers by providing dynamic virtualisation of block and file data in the same device with consistent management; true multivendor or heterogeneous virtualisation and a robust portfolio of proven data management software for sharing, consolidation, protecting, and recovering mission critical data.
