Optus claims IP storage first

Optus has announced what it claims to be the first fully managed, online data storage solution to be introduced to the Australian market.

Aimed at IP users in the SME and large corporate sectors, Optus' EXPAN IP Storage uses iSCSI (Internet Small Computer Systems Interface) technology and eliminates the need for costly deployment of new networking infrastructure.

Optus Business Managing Director, Peter Kaliaropoulos, said Optus EXPAN IP Storage, which was developed by Optus in conjunction with partners Hitachi Data Systems, SecureData Group and Cisco Systems, was ideal for companies with an IP infrastructure requiring a networked repository.

"Unlike traditional storage networked solutions which use proprietary technologies to transmit and receive data, Optus EXPAN IP Storage runs on ubiquitous and familiar IP networks, therefore minimal training of existing personnel is required to support it."

Kaliaropoulos said the fact that the storage occurs in a highly secure, offsite environment allowing instantaneous online access to a company's data repository, meant that Optus was offering its customers peace of mind as well as technology.

Once the stored data on the system is IP compatible, customers can run it over their Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN).

"The flexibility provided by Optus EXPAN IP Storage immediately solves problems customers face with campus, regional and disaster recovery requirements - it can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

"For example, a business with 200-plus employees and national branches can significantly benefit financially following the deployment of Optus EXPAN IP Storage as well as reaping the rewards from extra reliability; lower disk capacity utilisation; fewer points of storage management; and more efficient management of data," added Kaliaropoulos.
