SNIA's vision for 2004

The Storage Networking Industry Association is determined to succeed in its 2004 mission of advancing the adoption of storage networks as complete and trusted solutions.

The challenges it faces whilst trying to complete this mission include handling a volatile business environment; the strong need to focus on security and regulatory compliance; continued increase in data volume and data value and constraints to the IT budget make for continuing challenges in the storage and networking marketplace.

The 2004 vision, made by the SNIA Board of Directors involves:

1. The SNIA being recognised as an authority on data storage. Their education certification programmes are in place to accelerate accomplishment of this vision. They will continue to seek and secure external validation, build awareness of who they are and what they do, and make significant contributions to the industry.

2. The SNIA aims to be the catalyst to accelerate the development of storage technologies solutions and standards. They will continue to foster initiatives such as the Storage Management Initiative programme and the Data Management Forum programme.

The Data Management Forum has 500 industry and end user members on its portal. In 2004, it aims to operate: Data protection; information lifecycle management; regulatory compliance and content storage.

3. The SNIA will try to establish a world-class business model, including research and practices to support the goals of organisations. It will foster a culture of decision-making and prioritisation, and provide ongoing value propositions to its members.

The SNIA technical council aims to deliver a storage industry roadmap; continue oversight of the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) development and increase public awareness of the Technical Council and the SNIA.

The SNIA has four regional affiliates, Japan, Europe, South Asia, and Australia-New Zealand, which are showing membership growth of 55 percent. In 2004, the SNIA international committee intends to follow though on opportunities in Canada, India, Latin America and Taiwan.
