NHS awards $2.32 billion for storage contract

The National Health Service has awarded this contract to an alliance led by Computer Sciences Corporation to design, deliver and operate a records database for patients in the north-west and West Midlands of England.

This deal is part of a 10 year national programme in the U.K., which will electronically link patients to doctors and hospitals. The system will cover 50 million patients and will be shared by, 30,000 doctors and 270 health care providers.

When the IT infrastructure is completed in 2010, health care professionals will be able to do all of their business online, which will include accessing comprehensive patient records, an electronic prescription system and an online booking system.

Doctors and patients will also be able to make appointments through the network.

This particular area, led by the CSC will allow information to be accessed by 275.00 health professionals in the North of England.

CSC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Van B Honeycutt is very pleased that CSC has been selected by the National Health Service: "We will leverage our extensive experience in healthcare and providing IT services to public sector organisations to deliver the results the NHS is seeking. This agreement enlarges CSC's global healthcare base."

Each individual will have their records stored for life on the electronic database, so that patients, physicians, hospitals and community services will have access to up to date information instaneously, allowing more accurate diagnoses and care provision.
