Veritas enhances utility computing in 2004

Veritas believes that utility computing will be the next big step in the evolution of information technology and is gearing to provide the solutions to cope with the increased need.

They are continuing their vision started last year, which aims to enable utility computing through software, and are well on the way through their roadmap of providing applications which can help businesses run their own on-site IT operations.

Their utility computing model focuses on aligning technology with business requirements, which means preventing money being wasted through greater accountability.

Jeremy Burton, Veritas Chief Marketing Officer said: "Most vendors talking about utility computing are talking about hardware or outsourced services, not software. The Veritas vision of utility computing is unique. Through software, we're giving IT professionals the building blocks to create their own in-house IT utility, one step at a time."

The core strategy behind Veritas' utility computing vision involves system availability and availability of data starts with data backup. For this reason, Veritas will continue to enhance their backup products: Veritas NetBackup, for large enterprises and Veritas Backip Exec, for small and medium businesses. Both of these products are extremely useful for a wide range of needs, including rapidly recovering emails or leveraging the latest techniques for disk-based backup.

Veritas can also foresee a need to cope with the growing demand for data lifecycle management, driven by regulatory compliance.

Companies need systems which enable them to find information more easily for the regulatory bodies. Outsourcing can be costly and takes control away from the company. However, the Veritas Data Lifecycle Manager software offers a simple extension to backup, enabling indexing and retrieval of documents from historical backup tapes.

Disaster recovery is another key area for Veritas, following the major grid outrage in the Northeastern United States, earthquakes in Japan and major power failures in London and Italy. Vertias aims to enhance its solutions in this area too.

Burton added: "Availability, performance and automation are areas which we already lead, so we're well positioned to do well as the utility computing model take hold in IT."
