Lapland gift for Australian software vendor

The domination of the mobile phone handset market by Nokia and Ericsson indicates that Scandinavians are not shy when it comes to adopting technology. Sweden's Statskontoret, they're equivalent to VERS or GSAS, has signed an agreement with local software developer 80-20 Software for its document management application.

Statskontoret is the Swedish Agency for Public Management and helps develop policy and ensures that the government's electronic infrastructure is both open to the public and secure. Part of its role is to evaluate IT systems for government agencies.

In signing this deal, 80-20 Software has been qualified by Statskontoret for government use, which should guarantee some Swedish contracts for 80-20 Software's Document Manager application.

The agreement, which was announced today, is estimated to create revenue in excess of "six figures", according to the CEO of 80-20 Scandinavia Arve Nielsen. Currently the deal is valid for 2003 and comes with an extension option to take the contract out to the end of 2005.

Sweden is home to Lapland, itself said to be the home of Santa Claus and this agreement could be a gift horse for 80-20 Software.

"One of our goals in 2003 is to expand 80-20 Software's presence in key geographic areas and vertical markets where we already have a substantial footprint. Scandinavia is one of those areas, and government is one those market segments," said Mark Ross the CEO of 80-20 Software from Melbourne. He added that the company has seen "some impressive momentum in deals signed in this region over the last year and a half". Mr Nielsen added; "The contract will extend 80-20's awareness beyond Sweden and provide us access to government organisations in other Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Denmark and Finland." David Gillespie, the chief technology officer described the deal as "ultimately a lucrative deal for us."
