Sun goes for the jugular

Sun has upgraded its storage offerings in an announcement they describe as being its most "extensive" product refresh in years. Three new storage offerings came on to the market and Sun has given its StorEdge array a high specification and is making a bold strike at its rivals.

The new StorEdge 3510 FC is out to take on the main players in the market. Sun claims the new array has 45 per cent greater rack density than the Clarion CX200 from EMC, it has eight ports rather than the six Compaq offers on the Proliant MSA 1000.

In the network attached storage (NAS) Sun has released its new 3310 StorEdge NAS, which combines technology from their blade servers, which were part of the same group of product launches. The new NAS has a dedicated RAID engine and they claim twice the number of internal drives of rival products from Dell and Network Appliance.

A new tape storage system was also added to the line up with Sun releasing the StorEdge L8 autoloader, which Sun will come with Sun's Solistic Backup software as part of the bundle.
