USB hard drives ready to connect

LaCie has released a new range of hard disk storage systems that can be connected to a PC or network with a USB connection.

The new range is compatible with the new 800Mbps FireWire IEEE-1394b standard and offers users either 200GB or 500GB of capacity. LaCie see the new storage devices as ideal for offices that need to back up or store data heavy files such as digital images and documents away from the main servers and desktops.

The 200GB hard disk will store 12 hours of compressed video from a MiniDV camera.

IEEE-1394B is the latest FireWire standard and is two times faster than the current 400Mbps standard that is in use.

The hard disks can be attached and detached whilst the computer is still in use and are aimed at people looking for plug and play storage that can be connected to the network at will. LaCie provides two connectors to permit daisy chaining to existing drives without having to install a hub.

LaCie's Australian branch office will be offering the devices to the local market through its accredited resellers and partners in February. Prices are expected to be; $999 for a 200GB system, $1899 for 400GB and $2199 for 500GB. All of these prices include a one year warranty and three cables. LaCie said these hard disks are Mac and PC compatible.
