Silkworm goes through the middle

A new switch in the SilkWorm range from Brocade Systems will fill the gap between its low-end and high-end hardware for building storage area networks.

The 3900 model will be the first in the SilkWorm family of storage area network (SAN) switches to offer a total of 32 ports, bridging the divide between the 16-port 3800 model and the core-level 12000. The company said the 3900 would be a "modular building block for starting and growing small- to medium- enterprise SANs".

The switch incorporates support for 2Gbps Fibre Channel networking, like the others in the SilkWorm family, based on third generation ASIC technology.

Brocade said that twelve partners had started certification work in preparation for selling the 3900: Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Siemens, Hitachi Data Systems, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, MTI Technology, Network Appliance, SGI, StorageTek, and Unisys.
