NetApp Acquires Onaro

By Greg McNevin

January 7, 2008: In a boost to its storage and data management software portfolio, Network Appliance has announced that it will be acquiring the privately owned storage management specialist Onaro.

Onaro develops software to help enterprises manage storage with high data availability at lower cost than competing solutions.

By adding this capability to its stable of services, NetApp says it will be able to help enterprise organisations increase data centre and storage network efficiency via proactive management and the optimisation of storage service levels for availability and performance in dynamic data centres.

Particularly, the firm claims the predictive nature of Onaro’s software makes it suited to modelling and forecasting data centre and service-level changes.

“I am very excited about the breakthroughs we can achieve for our customers with the addition of Onaro to our manageability portfolio,” said Tom Georgens, executive vice president, Product Operations at NetApp.

“This deal is not just a first for the industry, but also a new opportunity for customers to rethink their large-scale storage infrastructures - and gain extra confidence in the strength of modular systems to manage the biggest data challenges out there.”

The acquisition is expected to close in Q1 2008. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
