Buffalo Rolls Out Portable Storage

September 24, 2008: Buffalo has turned the shrink ray on a new line of hard drives, releasing what it has dubbed the world’s thinnest external hard drive.

The company has unveiled its new super-slim MiniStation Shinobi, a 5mm thick, 57 gram hard drive designed for workers on the move.

Buffalo says the “ultra-portable” drive includes automated backup and sync software, mobile applications such as Firefox and Thunderbird, as well as its SecureLockMobile software to prevent unauthorised access if the drive is lost or stolen.

The other unique feature sported by the Shinobi is its self-contained cable management system, which is incorporated into the drive itself – eliminating the need to have a separate cable.

“With the new MiniStation Shinobi, we are continuing to push the envelope with more compact, design conscious storage solutions that will not only meet, but exceed the ever evolving needs of our customers,” said Ken Higgins, vice president of sales at Buffalo Technology.

Along with the Shinobi, the company has also released a new portable network attached storage solution called the DriveStation FlexNet. A marriage of an external USB drive and a network attached storage solution, the device enables users to switch between single, USB 2.0 connectivity and a 10/100 ethernet-based centralised storage solution.
