HPC Spending on the Rise

HPC Spending on the Rise

By Greg McNevin

October 20, 2008: According to a recent survey of high-performance computing (HPC) users from around the world, spending on HPC is set to increase in 2009 and 2010.

Tabor Research surveyed 92 HPC users from around the world for its annual HPC Budget Map Survey, and found that over two-thirds were expecting increases in their HPC budgets over the next two years.

The survey covered a range of budgets, and reports that over two thirds of those canvassed expect their total spending to increase by at least 10 percent, while almost half expect spending to increase by over 20 percent.

Furthermore, the survey results show that less than one in eight users expect a decrease in HPC spending.

“The health of the HPC industry is strong and appears to be getting stronger,” said Addison Snell, Vice President and General Manager of Tabor Research. “We believe that the HPC market will grow to be about a US$27.2 (AU$39.8) billion market by 2012, adding about US$8.5 (AU$12.4) billion since we first measured the size of the market at US$18.6 (AU$27.2) billion in 2007.

“During this period, we expect HPC to show some immunity to global budget cuts because of its relationship to strategic R&D,” he added.
