HP’s Business Desktops Serve up SSD

January 24, 2008: Hewlett Packard has announced two brand new energy-efficient desktop PC’s which the computing giant claims is the industry’s first to feature a Solid State Drive (SSD).

The new business desktop’s are the HP Compaq dc7800 and dc5800 which will both come with SSD and a variety of environmental features to move it up into Energy Star 4.0 compliance, the energy accreditation achieving popular acclaim in the US. This move by HP is expected to be a strong selling point, particularly as the improved memory access rates of SSD can be obtained at the same time as improving energy efficiency to help organisations meet their green-friendly targets.

The green push has come on the back of HP-underwritten research where IDC’s Go Green PC Power Play Study found that the US Government could save more then $82.4 million in energy costs – the equivalent to conserving more than 1.3 million barrels of oil in just one year – if its more than 10 million existing ENERGY STAR 3.0 PCs were updated to the new 4.0 standard.

“HP’s ongoing efforts to design for the environment have spanned decades,” said Alan Reed, vice president and general manager, Personal Systems Group, HP.

SSD’s are becoming increasingly popular, particularly as the price point on the units goes down and the advantages of faster access to data caused by the elimination of moving parts becomes widely recognised.
