Citrix Adds On-demand VM Provisioning

October 15, 2007: Application delivery infrastructure provider Citrix Systems has added on-demand provisioning of virtual servers to its arsenal, enabling the streaming of data centre and desktop operation systems.

Unveiled at the Gartner IT Expo in Orlando in the US, the Citrix Provisioning Server solution is based on the OS-streaming technology created by Ardence, Inc. which was acquired by Citrix in January.

The company says Provisioning Server enables dynamic streaming of datacentre and desktop operating systems and workloads from network storage to bare-metal or virtual servers in the datacenter, and a desktop OS and workload to virtual desktops and LAN-connected diskless PCs on-demand.

Citrix claims this provides more agility and cost-effectiveness when it comes to the delivery of applications and desktops. The solution will also go hand-in-hand with technology from virtual infrastructure vendor XenSource, also recently acquired by Citrix.

“By streamlining both datacenter and desktop delivery, Citrix Provisioning Server will provide significant economic and productivity benefits for enterprises,” said Lou Shipley, group vice president and general manager, management systems group, Citrix. “The simplified management and increased flexibility will deliver long-term benefits.”
