Clever Makes a Mockery over Wireless

June 20, 2007: Clever Communications have thrown their own weapons into the battle of broadband from both sides of Australian Federal politics, labelling Kevin Rudd’s comments on wireless technology ‘uneducated’ and ‘misleading.’

The business wireless network operator (formerly known as Access Providers) made their comments in response to widely reported in statements from Kevin Rudd in the media yesterday.

Keith Ondarchie, chairman and CEO of Clever Communications took particular exception to the Opposition Leader’s comments that wireless technologies are ‘second rate’ “Kevin Rudd has publicly made a number of statements on wireless technology that have been reported in the media this morning including comments that wireless technologies are ‘second rate’ and have a maximum distance of 20km,” he said. “Both or these statements are untrue.

Kevin Rudd’s statements were prompted by the Federal Government’s plan to connect 99 percent of household with speeds 40 times faster then what’s currently accessed. In response, Rudd plugged the Opposition’s $4.7 billion plan, claiming it will offer better coverage across the board.

Rudd said that with the “technical deficiencies in wireless” and “overwhelming scientific consensus in favour of fibre optic to the node,” that the Labor Government believes they’ve hit upon the right technology.

Ondarchie was irked by the statements which he believes “dismisses wireless technology,” consequently robbing rural and regional areas or a genuine alternative, rapid access alternative.

“Comment like these stifle competition in the Australian telecommunications industry – hurting companies trying to bring alternatives to the market while protecting Tier One incumbents that have a vested interest in protecting fixed-line revenues.”
