Hitachi Releases Three New Enterprise Drives

April 25, 2007: Hitachi has made a move on the enterprise storage market, releasing a trio of new hard drives targeted directly at enterprise storage systems.

With the 15K RPM Ultrastar 15K300, 7200 RPM Ultrastar A7K1000 and the 10K RPM Ultrastar C10K147 Hitachi is aiming to cover a broad range of enterprise systems, from mission-critical and lower duty cycle storage applications to servers.

The Ultrastar C10K147 is a key release for Hitachi as it is the company’s first small form factor (SFF) enterprise hard drive developed specifically for the high performance, low power requirements of servers.

This type of drive has been singled out by Hitachi as a prominent future player, largely due to IDC estimates that the industry will experience an intense thirst for the technology as cost, space and low power considerations in data centres drive a transition to SFF.

The company also says that these new drives feature enhanced reliability with a targeted 1.2 million hours mean time between failure.

“The enterprise market segment is an extremely important business for Hitachi. Our customers are providing the critical storage infrastructure that supports end-users’ ability to create, store and share digital content,” said Shinjiro Iwata, chief marketing officer, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. “Our 2007 product portfolio helps position Hitachi to further expand our enterprise segment participation and achieve our volume-growth targets.”
