Your Computer on a Stick

Your Computer on a Stick

march 13, 2007: Perth-based Pinkerton Consulting have released a device enabling users to simply carry around their entire computer environment, all at the cost of a black USB drive.

They’re calling it the Portable Computing Environment or for short, the ‘PCE,’ a name that represents the evolutionary shift of the standard PC. Available in the look of a standard USB device, or even in wearable format to be carried around on the wrist, the device can be booted up on any USB bootable host.

The key, is its simplicity. With existing software components such as an operating system and office products shrinked, users can easily carry what they expect from their personal computer (settings, files, programs) to another system. Pinkerton Software says the device houses capabilities that might not necessarily be new, but could have the change the way business and personal users run their computer infrastructure.

“As a consultant, I wanted to prove that the technology is readily available,” says Kevin Pinkerton of Pinkerton Consulting. “We’re using both open source software as well as Shrink software.”

Pinkerton believes with devices like these, users will simply travel with their own computer, instead of relying on passwords and vast network that house everyone.

“It can also operate as a standard blank USB drive,” says Pinkerton. “So even if you find you’re not using it this way, it’s still cheaper than buying a standard USB drive.”
