Hitachi Release Virtual tape Storage Solution

Hitachi Release Virtual tape Storage Solution

July 11th, 2006: Hitachi are offering reduced storage space requirements and increased data protection with new technology aimed at tiered storage environments.

The Virtual Tape Library (VTL) from Hitachi Data Systems offers scalable options that mimic tape libraries which make it possible for disk instead of tape to be used as a backup. The VTL uses data de-duplication technology ProtecTIER with HyperFactor from Diligent Technologies. These enable VTL to avoid storing redundant data while reducing required physical storage space – according to Hitachi the reduction can be by as much as 25 times.

The arrangement with Diligent allows Hitachi to offer businesses the benefits of disk-to-disk backup without having to make alterations to their current backup environment. “Through our tiered storage solutions, we have helped our customers save time and money by enabling them to integrate less expensive storage tiers and improve overall utilisation in their storage environments”, said Mark Kay, Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand, Hitachi Data Systems.

The VTL application accesses drives, robotics and cartridges as though it was a physical tape library. This eliminates the disruption of migration and reduces costs in downtime. The solution is available in Australia now from Hitachi Data Systems.
