LSI Shows Off SAS Switch

March 31st, 2006: Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) supplier LSI Logic has demonstrated its first SAS switch. The company says this will open up new options in building low-cost, high-performance storage networks.

The switch will enable SAS-based servers to connect to multiple SAS storage arrays addressing, the company says, infrastructure interoperability at every level.

The switch features nine x4 SAS ports, and can increase the size of SAS fabric by connecting multiple switches. Because it also uses copper cables, it can also support connection distances up to 8 meters and as many as 10 servers connected to one or more SAS storage arrays.

“As Ultra320 SCSI reached its limits, SAS emerged as the next generation technology for DAS environments,” says James Opfer, research VP at Gartner. “However, the opportunity for SAS is far greater as it offers the ability to be leveraged as a fabric. The versatility of SAS provides customers with the ability to take advantage of a new class of storage networking.”

LSI plans to show off its new technology at April’s Storage Networking World conference in San Diego California.
