Symantec Buys IM Protection

Symantec Buys IM Protection

January 5, 2006 Symantec has extended its security reach with the cash-only, US$75-million purchase of IMLogic and its IM Manager software.

Although the deal to purchase Microsoft partner, IMLogic is still subject to standard regulatory issues, it seems that Symantec's proposed takeover will go ahead. Symantec initially plans to sell IM Manager as a standalone product.

IM Manager acts to provide anti-malware protection for Instant Messaging applications such as MSN, AOL and Yahoo Messengers. MMLogic has previously partnered with Microsoft. In fact the company's founder, Francis deSouza, was responsible for the first version of MSN Messenger during his time running the Seattle giant's real-time collaboration group. More intriguingly from a market perspective, IM Logic previously partnered with Symantec rival McAfee.
