Windows XP SP3 Finally Released

Windows XP SP3 Finally Released

By Greg McNevin

May 8, 2008: After several delays and much anticipation, Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has finally made its way onto the automatic Windows Update Service, marking the final release of the last update to the aging OS.

SP3 was expected to be released on April 29, however, a last minute compatibility bug with its Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) surfaced, forcing the firm to delay the full release until Tuesday the 6th of May.

The compatibility issue also exists with Windows Vista SP1, and despite XP SP3 now being available on the automatic update service it has not be fixed. Due to this, Microsoft is advising that Dynamics RMS customers not install either patch until the problem is resolved.

While it is on the automatic update service, Microsoft says a filter has been deployed to ensure Dynamics RMS customers do not automatically receive the service pack.
