Hacker Releases Personal Details of 6M People

By Greg McNevin

May 13, 2008: In a disconcerting bid to highlight the lack of data security in Chile, a hacker has splashed confidential records belonging to six million Chileans across the internet.

Gleaned after successful hacks into government servers, the information includes the ID card numbers, addresses, academic records and telephone records according to the country’s El Mercurio daily newspaper.

The information was posted to two websites, "FayerWayer" and the community website "ElAntro" according to AFP, and remained there for several hours until removed by authorities.

Along with the information the hacker included a message claiming s/he wanted to “show how unprotected personal data is in Chile.”

“[N]obody bothers protecting that information.”
