Linux desktop transformer

LaCie has released a portable hard drive that uses MandrakeSoft's version of Linux to transform any computer into a Linux box, without any modifications being made to it.

Globetrotter is a 30GB hard drive that can run from the USB port of a computer and is designed for people who feel comfortable with Linux and want to use it anywhere using a laptop.

It includes other applications and personal settings, productivity suite OpenOffice.org and the integrated personal information management suites KDE Kontact and Novell Evolution.

Staff at MandrakeSoft believe that there was a need for a device such as this, which is capable of carrying a full work environment but is not actually a computer.

Globetrotter is being touted as an extension to the concept behind MandrakeMove, which is a CD that can be used to boot a personalised desktop.

It is scheduled for release this month and comes with 30 days worth of web-based support.
