Hitachi's 400GB release ups the ante in capacity war

Hot on the heels of Fujitsu's record-breaking unveiling of its 300GB drive, Hitachi has released a rival 400GB drive for audio video cameras, to steal its thunder.

Hitachi has claimed that its 400GB Deskstar 7K400 is the highest capacity 3.5-inch ATA hard drive in the world, almost instantly after Fujitsu thought they were running away with the title.

This new drive has been designed specifically for use with audio video and ATA nearline environments. So it could be applied to digital video recorders, DVRs and personal music players, such as Apple Computer iPods.

Jose Antelo, general manager of 3.5-inch consumer and commercial HDDs, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies said. "Extremely high capacity disk drives are more essential now than ever with digital video recording coming into the mainstream. We are now in a position to extend our consumer electronics portfolio to include the high-end device segments, most notably the nascent market for high-capacity DVRs."

This hard drive is the first to include a new industry-standard AV feature: Streaming Command Set. It enhances streaming functionality in digital video applications and optimises the drives for storing and retrieving digital content on a DVR.

It has been predicted that DVRs will be occupied in 25.7 million homes by 2007, and high definition television broadcasts (HDTV) are driving the need for additional DVR storage capacity. 8.7GB of storage is needed for each hour of a broadcast recording.

The Deskstar 7K400 also performs at a rate of 7,200 rpm and has the capacity to store 400 hours of standard TV programming, 45 hours of HDTV programming and more than 6,500 hours of high quality digital music.
