Stoneware Embraces Google Apps for webOS

By Greg McNevin

March 24, 2008: As virtualisation and broadband infrastructure improves, companies are finding new business opportunities based on the “the network is the computer” line of thought, such as Stoneware and its integration of Google’s online application suite in its next webOS virtualised operating system.

The company has announced that its upcoming webOS version 5.3 release in April will feature direct integration of Google Apps, and will deliver a Virtual Web Desktop vision that offers Windows, web, and hosted applications in a single online desktop interface.

Aimed predominately at remote and mobile workers, Stoneware says its solution will enable organisations to provide seamless access existing corporate Windows and web applications alongside Google’s applications.

“We see desktop virtualisation from a web perspective,” says Rick German, CEO of Stoneware. “As the number of web and hosted web applications grow within the enterprise, users will require a virtual desktop that can deliver all of their applications, not just Windows applications.

German says that SaaS (Software as a Service) providers, such as Google, can significantly reduce an organisation's total cost of ownership, and as such need to be tightly integrated with the rest of the corporate computing resources.

“Stoneware's webOS becomes the perfect web desktop virtualisation platform for integrating applications and services while simplifying access for the end user,” says German.
