New asset management society to make its Australian bow

Sydney is to host the Australian launch of the Global Society for Asset Management (GSAM), the world's first international trade and professional association to focus on the expanding field of digital asset management (DAM).

GSAM, which will make its Australian debut at the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers) 2003 conference at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre on July 3, will tackle burning issues in the DAM industry, such as managing media assets and copyright.

The Society is hoping the Australian chapter will build on the success and market acceptance it has enjoyed so far in Europe and North America. A host of DAM companies have already signed up as GSAM members, including Avid Technology, Ascent Media Group, Artesia Technologies, RightsLine, Telestream, Adams Systems and eMotion.

"The outlets for content keep growing," says GSAM Australia Chair Phil Sandberg. "With print, Internet, film, DVD, cable, satellite, terrestrial, PDAs and even games consoles, this has become an era of 'create once, distribute many'. This explosion has created the need for a forum to take on the issues of technology, creation, workflows and rights management. GSAM is that forum."

Among the goals the organisation has set itself are: to actively influence standards that promote openness and interoperability; to reduce the complexity of the digital asset management field by demonstrating best practices across multiple vertical industries; to provide an accessible forum for sharing of lessons learned globally; to aggregate, promote and share the expertise of thought leaders in the field and identify the potential of new areas as they evolve and emerge.
