BOSSIE’s For Storage Providers

BOSSIE’s For Storage Providers

October 2, 2007: Infoworld’s Best of Open Source Software awards (BOSSIE’s) for 2007 have been released with top honours going to an interesting list of candidates.

Open source software is having a surprising impact on the storage world, with an increasing amount of software applications heading down the information sharing path. That isn’t to say companies have suddenly stopped trying to turn a profit, but rather open source has come a long way for there now to be so many corporations looking to get their feet wet by going open source.

"Open Source Software has moved into the mainstream. InfoWorld's inaugural Bossie Award winners represent mature, flexible, and reliable solutions that increasingly define the segment." Steve Fox, Editor in Chief at InfoWorld told StorageSearch.

Infoworld’s inaugural BOSSIE award for storage went to Sun’s Zetabyte File System (ZFS) which was originally shipped with Solaris 10. Interestingly ZFS is currently at the heart of a patent dispute between Network Appliance and Sun Microsystems, regardless of the outcome of that lawsuit, ZFS has made its mark on the storage world.

The BOSSIE for best NAS server went to FreeNAS, which is built on FreeBSD and provides an attractive alternate to its non-open source rivals. Other BOSSIE’s for storage include best open source networking software going to AoE Tools and best block I/O to Iometer and best file I/O tool to IOzone.
