Riverbed Responds to Quantum

By Greg McNevin

October 12, 2007: Riverbed has responded to allegations of patent infringement laid out by Quantum earlier this week, acknowledging Quantum’s complaint but asserting its innocence.

In the short statement, Riverbed proclaimed that its policy is to respect the intellectual property rights of all third parties, adding that it “has no factual or other basis to believe that it infringes the patents of any third party, including Quantum.”

Quantum alleges that Riverbed’s technology infringes on its 810 patent for data de-duplication, and claims that it has spend eight months trying to engage Riverbed to resolve its grievance. The company says this effort was unsuccessful, leading it to launch legal action.

In its succinct statement, Riverbed claims it will to respond to Quantum's claims in a timely manner, adding that it will defend itself in this action to ensure that its rights are fully protected.

As de-duplication technology is becoming so fundamental to data storage and wide area file services the case has the potential to send shockwaves through the industry.
