JPEGs reduced by 30% without quality loss

Mar 29, 2005: New technology is now available that claims to be capable of reducing the size of JPEG photographs by 30 percent without losing any of the image quality, which will make it easier to fit more data on to CDs, DVDs and other storage backup media.

The StuffIT Deluxe 9.0 for Windows, created by Allume Systems, also aims to make life easier for professionals and businesses looking to share images over the Internet or on the network, where zip cannot compress any further.

Matthew Covington, the senior product manager at Allume, said: "By allowing customers to now compress their JPEG files we've solved one of the biggest problems that users face when using legacy compression technologies such as zip.

"The integration of our new photo compression, anti-virus, and ZipFolders makes StuffIt the most innovative compression software on the market today. StuffIt raises the bar for what customers should expect from their software."

Some of the features include ZipMagic, which is a device that provides transparent access to zip archives from Windows Explorer and any application. It allows users to work with items stored in zip archives as if they would work with items stored in a regular directory.

It includes anti-virus software, password protection to secure archives, and a new DiskIndex facility. This allows users to create a searchable index of any CD or DVD. They are able to list all the files stored on the disc and the contents of any archive on a disc, providing the user with the ability to browse and search CDs and DVDs even when the discs are not in the computer.
