IBM portal to drive Power community expansion

By Stuart Finlayson

After announcing a few weeks ago that it is to emulate the open source world by establishing a community of developers around its new Power microprocessor architecture, IBM is to take a step further in facilitating the expansion of this community by launching a dedicated developer portal.

The company's Power portal will allow developers and users of the technology to share information online, much in the same fashion as members of the global Linux community share information on developments to the open source architecture.

IBM hopes that the portal will fulfil a twin purpose – building a marketplace for hardware and software for Power-based devices and providing a forum for Power chip users to offer their feedback and provide the company with their input as to what enhancements should be made to future versions of the technology.

The portal will also include software downloads that will allow users to test software and create customised chips.
