Sun opens up storage to rivals

In a move it says is designed to offer its customers an expanded choice, Sun has opened up its storage clustering program to third-party storage vendors.

As part of the Sun Cluster Open Storage Program, the vendor is working closely with major storage vendors, including EMC, IBM and Network Appliance, to enable the self certification of their respective storage arrays.

The program uses the same criteria that Sun uses to validate its own Sun Cluster 3 technology with Sun StorEdge.

"In today's diverse IT climate, customers want increased choice in configurations without compromising on availability and quality," said Ann Wettersten, vice president, software systems marketing, Sun Microsystems. "With the Sun Cluster Open Storage Program, customers now enjoy a wider choice of storage arrays that seamlessly interoperate with Sun Cluster."

"The high availability characteristics of a clustered environment make it a key component of a customers' information lifecycle management strategy," said Don Swatik, vice president of global solutions, EMC. "EMC's participation in the Sun Cluster Open Storage Program further provides our mutual customers with assurances of greater interoperability and joint support."

"Network Appliance is a natural fit for the Sun Cluster Open Storage Program," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of marketing, Network Appliance. "Through the program, NetApp unified storage systems provide enterprise customers with increased choice and investment protection for their Sun Cluster environments. This unique combination delivers both the high availability expected from Sun Cluster and the added flexibility and simplicity that NetApp unified storage solutions deliver."
