Sun set to unveil latest Linux desktop

Sun Microsystems is preparing to announce the second version release of its Java Desktop System at the Network Computing 04Q2 event scheduled in Shanghai, China, this week.

The software will be unveiled with new management and programming tools and will have some of the same features as Microsoft Windows.

It hopes that this open source software will be the favourite, out of the choice of Windows, Linux and Solaris.

Along with this announcement, Sun is also expected to release the availability of a new programming tool collection for all of these operating systems, so developers can write Java from any kind of desktop.

The new desktop provided by Sun will also include an automated software update service and the ability for a manager to control a system remotely. An administrator will also be able to control the privileges and settings of different groups of desktop users.

In addition, the new Sun software will be delivered with Java Studio and NetBeans developer tools. The Java Studio simplifies Java coding by making it more user friendly and logical for workers.

NetBeans improves the "look and feel" and provides developers with better integration to build web, rich desktop and mobile Java applications.
